The Arrival of the April Storm. Big Sur, California.

It’s been the longest time since I uploaded a new photograph online, ever since I started shooting back in 2007. I’ve blogged about the slump in one of my earlier posts.

Either way, it’s great to be shooting again. This was taken last Sunday as the new spring storm was arriving to the West Coast. It’s been wet since then. While not a new composition for me, I wanted to shoot a B&W version from here, with these heavy clouds and an opening right over these rocks.

Ivan, I love how this shot came out. What did you end up shooting it with? Did you use any ND filters? I finally took the plunge and ordered myself Lee filter holder, 77mm wide angle adapter, .6 and .9 SE ND Filter and Big Stopper. Hopefully, they will be coming in the next month.

Hey Chris -

Glad to hear you got the filters. You’ll love them, and I think you’ll have
the exact same setup I have. For this shot I used my 24-70mm lens and put on
the 0.9 ND grad filter for the sky. Usually I combine the two, but for this
one I only used 0.9. First, I wanted to be within 1/2 to 1 second range for
the exposure to keep the waves in motion. More filters was giving me 2-3
seconds. Second, it was dark enough that 3-stops turned out to be plenty of
stops to balance the exposure.
